Carter Army-Navy & Surplus
Carter Army-Navy & Surplus is Tom Carter's military surplus store on Main Street in downtown Maruf. In summer 2000 it is struggling to stay open.
History
History
Tom opened the store in the early 1980s, after his four years in the U.S. Army, using his logistics experience and his contacts at military auctions. In late 1999 he moved its stock and sales onto a desktop PC.
Money trouble
By summer 2000 the store is in serious trouble: fewer people shop downtown, wholesale costs have gone up, and Tom barely breaks even on the rent and the distributors' bills. Linda Carter, who keeps its books, knows exactly how bad it is, and Peggy Evans notices it in the Carters' shopping.
In the game
The kid can shop here during opening hours, with a family wholesale discount on some surplus items from Tom. Tom is puzzled at first when the kid spends pocket money on his own shelves.
Frank Dawson drops in now and then to judge how genuine the military gear is and to trade banter with Tom.
