Maruf

Maruf is the small American town where EmporMogul takes place: a county seat and rural hub ringed by a paved bypass, with a river on its east side, an old industrial mill, and Main Street downtown.

Description

Geography

The paved, circular Ring Road, about 1.24 km across, marks the edge of town. Around it lie rolling green hills, farmsteads with silos and barns, and small ponds. A river runs north to south through the eastern half of town, crossed by road bridges. Inside the ring, a street grid holds downtown on Main Street, with the high school north of it.

Districts

  • Downtown Main Street: red brick commercial buildings of several storeys, the town hall with its clock tower, the church, Palmer's Market, Carter Army-Navy & Surplus, a diner and small businesses.
  • School Street neighbourhood: shaded residential streets in the west and south of town, home to the Carters and to Frank Dawson.
  • North Campus: the high school, its football and soccer field, running track and sports courts.
  • East River Works: the industrial district on the river's eastern curve inside the Ring Road, with the historic mill, a factory, brick smokestacks and grain silos.
  • Outer Ring and farmlands: rural plots, access roads, barns and open land outside the Ring Road.

History

Maruf was founded in the late 19th century as a river crossing and trading settlement, and named Maruf by an early merchant and surveyor. It grew into an industrial and farming hub once the river mill and the central road network were built.
