Character
Peggy Evans
Peggy Evans is the head cashier at Palmer's Market, the grocery store on Main Street in Maruf, and Linda Carter's close friend since high school.
Biography
Peggy was born in Maruf and graduated from Maruf High School in the Class of 1980, alongside Linda Carter. The two have stayed close friends for twenty years, through marriages, children and changes in town.
She is a resilient single mother raising a younger school-age child, balancing long shifts at the register with her home, and is widely respected in town for how hard she works. At the main checkout in town she sees nearly everyone in Maruf every week, and notices shopping habits, budgets and town news without prying.
Relationships
The Carters
Peggy knows about Linda's surprise pregnancy: she shares advice, offers her child's outgrown baby things, and keeps a quiet eye on how Tom's store is doing. She treats the kid warmly, like an aunt or family friend, and calls them "hon".

- Linda Carter: close friend and classmate; they confide in each other about money, health and children.
- Frank Dawson: she treats him with respectful warmth and playful humour.
- Luke or Sarah: warm, like an aunt.

Daily life
At work
Peggy runs the checkout lanes and the cash registers at Palmer's Market, balances the day's receipts and stocks shelves between rushes. She has Frank Dawson's daily milk order ready as soon as she sees someone from School Street come in.
